Now, several of the world’s top fashion designers will
pay homage to Barbie® doll’s influence in the fashion
world with the creation of Barbie™ Luxe, an adult line
of apparel, accessories and beauty items launching
exclusively at Fred Segal Flair in Santa Monica.

Using
Barbie® as their style muse, Anna Sui, Anya Hindmarch,
Citizens of Humanity, Judith Leiber, Nickel, Not
Rational, Paper Denim & Cloth and Tarina Tarantino have
taken their hottest trends and items and infused them
with subtle, whimsical hints of Barbie® doll’s sense of
fun and fashion. The limited edition collections include
original, designer-specific touches like pink stitching
on denim jeans and a retro feel to fabrics and
silhouettes. Barbie™ Luxe is enhanced with style basics
and other trendy items designed by existing Mattel®
Barbie®
partners.
“I
started dressing Barbie® dolls with my own designs at an
early age,” said designer Anna Sui. “It’s ironic that I
am now drawing from the legacy to create my own line
inspired by Barbie® doll. I know women will love it
because it combines their childhood love of Barbie™
fashions with the sophistication of who they are today.”
In
addition to designing the Barbie™ by Anna Sui line –
sold at Fred Segal Flair in Santa Monica, as well as the
designer’s own doors in New York – Sui is also
partnering with Barbie™ to design and launch the BoHo
Barbie® doll in Spring 2006.
The
official unveiling of the Barbie™ Luxe line happened in
the midst of Los Angeles Fashion Week, at Santa Monica’s
Fred Segal Flair, an upscale boutique known among
fashionistas as the destination for fashionable,
trend-setting items. Following the launch of Barbie™
Luxe at Fred Segal Flair in Santa Monica, other select
boutiques nationwide will roll out capsule collections
by additional leading designers on an ongoing basis.

store offers a tightly edited, hand-picked collection of
fashion’s little treasures, and I’m very excited to
bring Barbie™ Luxe and its one-of-a-kind capsule
collections to my clientele,” said Jeannine Braden,
owner of Fred Segal Flair in Santa Monica. “I think

‘girls’ who played with Barbie® doll, and the collection
brings back those memories in an upscale, understated
and very cool way. I have always been a big fan of
Barbie®.”
Building on the popularity and success of the brand’s
adult Barbie™ Couture line launched in Japan in 2003, a
“hint” of the Barbie™ Luxe line has recently been seen
in Los Angeles via a blended Japanese language and retro
Barbie® wild posting campaign. Three collectable images
– Barbie® doll in the original black-and-white-striped,
one-piece bathing suit (sans Barbie®), a 60s-inspired
Barbie® portrait, and a pony-tailed-and-pearl Barbie®
profile – have been positioned in high-traffic,
trend-setting areas for Angelenos to tear-off and take
home with them.
