Ettore Bugatti’s Type 57 Atlantic is considered by many to be the most beautiful car ever made. Its teardrop bodywork, dorsal seam, and riveted aluminum coachwork by Jean Bugatti made it a masterpiece of Art Deco sculpture. Only four Atlantics were built, and only three survive. The car was named after Jean Bugatti’s friend, the aviator Jean Mermoz, who had crossed the Atlantic. The dorsal seam along the roof and the riveted flanges were inspired by aviation construction. The Atlantic combined a 3.3-liter straight-8 engine with a lightweight aluminum body, giving it performance that matched its beauty. Ralph Lauren owns one. The others are in museums.
