No. 17 – THE ALCHEMIST OF METAL
The Man Who Chained the Future

Paco Rabanne arrived in Paris with an architecture degree and a contempt for fabric. In 1966, he unveiled dresses made of linked aluminum discs, plastic plates, and chain mail—garments that clinked when the models walked and weighed more than the woman inside them. Harper's Bazaar declared his work "unwearable," which was exactly the point: Rabanne was not designing clothes; he was designing provocations in metal. His fragrances would later conquer the world, but in the 1960s he conquered the runway with dresses that looked like armor for a space priestess. This Pop Art homage captures his metallic obsession: bold Ben-Day dot backgrounds, flat blocks of silver and gold, a model in a Rabanne disc dress rendered like a Lichtenstein panel, surrounded by abstract chains, geometric bolts, and the industrial gleam of a man who believed the future should sound like change. The year reads 1966—when a dress stopped being soft and started being science.
