The Douglas DC-3 was the first airliner that made airlines profitable. Before the DC-3, airlines survived on government mail contracts. After the DC-3, they survived on passengers. With its all-metal construction, retractable landing gear, and two 1,000-horsepower engines, the DC-3 could carry 21 passengers 1,500 miles at 180 mph. It was faster, safer, and more comfortable than anything that had come before, and it revolutionized air travel. During World War II, the DC-3 served as the C-47 Skytrain, dropping paratroopers at Normandy and flying the Hump over the Himalayas. After the war, converted military transports became the backbone of the world’s airlines. Today, more than eighty years after its first flight, DC-3s still fly. On July 25, 1909, he flew from Calais to Dover in 37 minutes, crossing the English Channel and winning the Daily Mail prize of 1,000 pounds. The Bleriot XI was constructed of wood, fabric, and wire, powered by a 25-horsepower Anzani three-cylinder engine. It had no instruments except a compass and an oil pressure gauge. Bleriot navigated by following a French destroyer across the Channel. The flight changed the world. It proved that aircraft could cross significant bodies of water, and it sparked an aviation boom that would transform warfare, commerce, and travel within a single generation. The original aircraft is preserved at the Musee de l’Air in Paris.
