The original luxury train from Paris to Istanbul, the Orient Express was not merely transportation but a world unto itself. Operated by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, it introduced sleeping cars and dining cars to Europe and became synonymous with the glamour of international travel. Agatha Christie made it immortal with Murder on the Orient Express, but the real train was even more extraordinary. Passengers in the 1920s and 1930s dined on linen and crystal while the train rolled through the Alps, the Danube Valley, and the Balkans. It was a rolling palace where diplomats, spies, and socialites mingled in gilt-edged salons. The original 1883 route ran from Paris to Constantinople via Munich, Vienna, Budapest, and Bucharest. Over time the route shifted, but the name never lost its magic. The last true Orient Express made its final run in 2009, but the legend endures in film, literature, and the imagination of every traveler who has ever dreamt of a sleeper compartment bound for the East.
