The Super Chief was Santa Fe’s all-Pullman streamliner through the American Southwest, running from Chicago to Los Angeles on the most scenic railroad route in the United States. It was the train of Hollywood stars, studio executives, and Southwestern luminaries, and it remains the definitive image of American rail luxury. What set the Super Chief apart was its attention to aesthetic detail. The dining cars featured Native American-inspired textiles, pottery, and murals commissioned from Southwestern artists. The china, glassware, and silverware were designed specifically for the train and bore the ‘Santa Fe’ script. It was, in the words of one passenger, ‘a museum that moved at ninety miles an hour.’ The train introduced the EMD F-series diesel locomotive in 1936, replacing steam with the streamlined warbonnet livery that became an American icon. The Super Chief survived into the Amtrak era as the Southwest Chief, but the all-Pullman magic of the original ended in 1971.
