Great Northern Railway / 1929-present / Chicago to Seattle

Named for James J. Hill, the Empire Builder of the Great Northern Railway, this train has carried passengers across the northern tier of the United States for nearly a century. From Chicago through the Mississippi Valley, the wheat fields of North Dakota, and the Glacier National Park, it is the most scenic long-distance train in America. The original train was hauled by Great Northern’s S-2 Northern steam locomotives, painted in the railroad’s distinctive orange and green. The route was chosen not for speed but for beauty, winding through some of the most spectacular landscapes in North America. Today the Empire Builder is operated by Amtrak and remains one of the most popular long-distance trains in the United States. The Glacier Park observation dome cars and the Portland/Seattle split at Spokane continue a tradition of rail travel that began when James J. Hill drove the last spike in 1893.
