Fokker / 1925-1932 / The Reliable One
The Fokker F.VII was the most reliable airliner of the 1920s. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines used it to open the first intercontinental air route, from Amsterdam to Batavia (Jakarta), a journey of 8,000 miles that took eleven days. The F.VII’s high-wing monoplane design, three engines, and robust construction made it the safest airliner of its era. It crossed the Andes, the Sahara, and the Himalayas, and it introduced the world to the idea that any destination was within reach. KLM’s F.VIIs carried mail, passengers, and cargo to every continent. They were the workhorses of early aviation, and they proved that reliability was more important than speed.
