BLUE COMET
Central Railroad of New Jersey / 1929-1941 / Jersey City to Atlantic City
The Blue Comet was the most elegant train ever to serve the Jersey Shore, a deep-blue express that raced through the Pine Barrens to deposit passengers at the boardwalks and casinos of Atlantic City. It was, in its brief life, the very image of seaside glamour. Operated by the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the train featured Pullman cars painted in matching Comet blue, a dining car, and an observation car. The locomotives were 4-6-2 Pacifics with streamlined shrouds, and they cut the journey from Jersey City to Atlantic City to just two hours. The Great Depression and declining rail traffic doomed the Blue Comet, and the last train ran in 1941. But its memory lives on in the model railroads, collector plates, and nostalgic photographs that preserve the era when Atlantic City was the nation’s summer capital.
