ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM II
Rolls-Royce / 1929-1936 / The Best Car in the World
The Rolls-Royce Phantom II was the last of the great Rolls-Royce straight-six models before the V12 era. Hand-built at Derby, it carried on the tradition of silence, quality, and refinement that had made Rolls-Royce the standard of the world. Every Phantom II was a bespoke commission. The chassis was delivered to the customer’s chosen coachbuilder, who created a body to their exact specifications. The result was a fleet of automobiles that ranged from sporting tourers to formal limousines, each one unique. The Phantom II was the car of kings, maharajas, and Hollywood royalty. Its 7.7-liter engine was virtually silent, its ride was imperceptible, and its craftsmanship was beyond compare. It was, and remains, the best car in the world. Manufacturer Rolls-Royce Ltd. With a 16-cylinder engine designed by Owen Nacker, it was the first production car with a 16-cylinder engine, and it established Cadillac as the pinnacle of American luxury. The V-16 was available in dozens of body styles, from formal town cars to racy convertibles. The engine was so smooth that a pencil could be balanced on its head at idle. The Goddess of Speed hood ornament, the chrome grille, and the Art Deco interior details made every V-16 a statement of wealth and taste. Despite the Great Depression, Cadillac sold nearly 5,000 V-16s over ten years. It was the choice of movie stars, industrialists, and politicians who wanted the ultimate in American engineering. Today it remains the definitive expression of Art Deco automotive design. Manufacturer Cadillac Motor Company
