BLERIOT XI
Louis Bleriot / 1909 / First Across the English Channel
Louis Bleriot’s frail monoplane was the machine that proved aviation had a future. On July 25, 1909, he flew from Calais to Dover in 37 minutes, crossing the English Channel and winning the Daily Mail prize of 1,000 pounds. The Bleriot XI was constructed of wood, fabric, and wire, powered by a 25-horsepower Anzani three-cylinder engine. It had no instruments except a compass and an oil pressure gauge. Bleriot navigated by following a French destroyer across the Channel. The flight changed the world. It proved that aircraft could cross significant bodies of water, and it sparked an aviation boom that would transform warfare, commerce, and travel within a single generation. The original aircraft is preserved at the Musee de l’Air in Paris.
