The Southern Pacific’s Daylight was the most beautiful train in California, a scarlet-and-orange streamliner that raced along the Pacific coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It was, in every sense, the train for California. The GS-series ‘Golden State’ steam locomotives were painted in matching red-and-orange warbonnet liveries, and the passenger cars featured parlor, coffee shop, and observation cars with interiors of redwood and chrome. The train hugged the coastline for much of the journey, offering passengers views of the Pacific surf and the golden hills of the Central Coast. The Daylight represented the California dream: sunshine, speed, and natural beauty. It carried movie stars, politicians, and ordinary Californians up and down the coast for three decades before giving way to the realities of airline competition and the Interstate Highway System.
