Biography: Gonzalez-Torres was one of the most important conceptual artists of the late 20th century. His poetic, minimal works – piles of candy representing his partner’s body weight, synchronized clocks, strings of lightbulbs –addressed love, loss, and the AIDS crisis with radical gentleness. Born in Cuba and exiled to Spain as a teenager, he moved to New York and created an art of disappearance and memory. He died of AIDS in 1996 at age thirty-eight.
