Biography: Wood lived his life as a gay man in rural Iowa at a time when homosexuality was deeply stigmatized in
Middle America. His idealized Midwestern landscapes and farm scenes masked a private life of queer desire and
bohemian partnerships. The iconic couple in American Gothic – his sister and his dentist – became accidental symbols of American conservatism, while Wood himself lived outside those norms.
