Biography: John lived in France for most of her adult life, painting quiet, intimate portraits of solitary women in
domestic interiors. She had a long and passionate relationship with sculptor Auguste Rodin, but her private life also included relationships with women. Her muted palette and contemplative stillness made her one of the most subtly radical painters of her era – a woman who claimed space for quiet, interior life in an art world that celebrated spectacle.
