Biography: Hosmer moved to Rome at age twenty-two and never looked back. She became the center of a circle of
literary and artistic lesbians known as the ‘White Marmorean Flock,’ including fellow sculptors Emma Stebbins and
Edmonia Lewis. Her powerful female figures – warriors, queens, and mythological women – challenged Victorian
expectations of feminine delicacy. She was one of the first American women to support herself entirely through
sculpture.
