Biography: Basquiat was a street artist turned gallery phenomenon whose coded crowns, anatomical skulls, and graffiti scrawls shook the New York art world in the 1980s. Though he had relationships with women including Madonna, his circle was deeply queer and his work challenged white supremacy, capitalism, and the art establishment. He died of a heroin overdose at twenty-seven, leaving behind a body of work that has only grown in power and influence.
