Biography: Johns met Robert Rauschenberg in 1953, and the two became romantic partners and artistic collaborators for nearly a decade. Their relationship was one of the most significant in 20th-century American art, as they pushed each other toward new forms of abstraction and assemblage. Johns transformed everyday American symbols – flags, targets, numbers – into meditations on perception and meaning, forever changing the direction of postwar art.
