Biography: Laurencin exhibited with Picasso and Braque in the early Cubist years but forged her own path with
pastel-toned paintings of ghostly women and small animals. She was a regular at the lesbian salon of American writer Natalie Clifford Barney in Paris, and her first patron was Gertrude Stein. Her relationships with both men and women made her part of a community of avant-garde artists who were relatively open about their sexuality in early 20th-century Paris.
