Biography: Rauschenberg met Jasper Johns in 1952 while designing window displays, and their six-year romantic partnership was also one of the most consequential artistic collaborations in American history. His ‘combines’ – works that fused painting and sculpture, newspaper and fabric, trash and treasure – demolished the boundaries between art and life. He gave his Black Painting to Johns as a gift, and it remained in Johns’ collection for over fifty years.
