The Colonel surveys the coastline in full regimentals: navy blazer, bright green tie, a kilt of proper tartan with its silver sporran polished for inspection, and the great green tam that has survived three wars and one trip through the wash. Beside him the tortoise reviews the paperwork with the patience of a creature who has outlived every deadline. The dunes are golden. The tide is on schedule. Dignity is maintained.
A curtain of tremendous composure. Grumpy by choice, gorgeous by design, completely waterproof – like all the best officers.
