For sixty-five years, the 20th Century Limited was the most famous passenger train in America. It ran between Grand Central Terminal and LaSalle Street Station from 1902 until December 2, 1967. Unlike its rival the Broadway Limited, which climbed the Allegheny Mountains, the New York Central followed the Hudson River, the Mohawk Valley, and the shores of Lake Erie. This ‘Water Level Route’ meant gentler grades, higher speeds, and a journey as smooth as an ocean liner. The train gave the English language a permanent phrase. At Grand Central Terminal, boarding passengers walked a crimson carpet from the main concourse directly to their Pullman sleeping cars. No other train received this treatment. Over time, newspapers and Hollywood made ‘red-carpet treatment’ synonymous with the highest standard of luxury. On June 15, 1938, the train was reborn. Industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss created a symphony of Art Deco geometry: shrouded J-3a Hudson steam locomotives in tones of blue and grey, matched to new Pullman cars with rounded roofs, fluted stainless-steel sides, and interiors of walnut, brushed aluminum, and plum wool. The train became a machine-age icon.
