A glance from under a crimson hat, lit like late afternoon, upon a ground of deep green.
The Girl in the Red Hat has been caught mid-turn, lips just parted, as if the painter had said something outrageous and she had decided, generously, to pretend not to have heard. Her hat is the red of crushed raspberries, her blue robe the color of evening, and the whole portrait rests upon a ground of deep green like a jewel in velvet.
Red and green is the boldest pairing in the color wheel and Vermeer made it look inevitable, which is the trick of all great painting. Hang this plate where the light dims toward evening, among dark woods and brass, or let it interrupt a quiet gallery wall with exactly one raised eyebrow.
Generous 10-inch fine ceramic with a high-gloss glaze. For confidantes, keepers of secrets, and excellent eavesdroppers.
Part of the The Masterpiece Collection of old master portrait plates.
Beauty is everywhere.
