The Ruffed Nobleman – Masterpiece Portrait Plate
A courtier of the great age, lace at the throat and gold at the collar, upon deep umber.
There were men in the seventeenth century who understood that a ruff is a form of architecture, and this nobleman was their foreman. The Ruffed Nobleman looks out from a ground of deep umber with a mustache of the first order, lace at the throat like sea foam, and a gold chain that means business. Rubens painted him knowing exactly what he was worth, and the plate agrees.
Dark brown, cream, and gold is the library-at-midnight palette, and this plate is its chairman. Hang it in the study above the good whiskey, pair it with leather chairs and a globe nobody has ever spun idly, or give him the gallery wall between landscapes where he can keep an eye on the proceedings.
Generous 10-inch fine ceramic with a high-gloss glaze. For the man of the house, whoever that turns out to be.
Part of the The Masterpiece Collection of old master portrait plates.
