The son of a London cab driver, Lee Alexander McQueen learned his trade cutting suits for bankers on Savile Row and his attitude on the streets of the East End – and he brought both to a runway that would never be safe again. In 1995 he sent models down the catwalk in torn tartan and defiant corsetry, a collection called Highland Rape that left critics howling and the old guard permanently unsettled. His bumsters dropped waistlines to the edge of indecency. His skull scarves became a global uniform. His shows were full-blown theater – a white dress spray-painted by robot arms, a chessboard that swallowed its models whole. "I design clothes because I don't want women to look all innocent and naive," he said. He took four British Designer of the Year awards, helmed Givenchy, and made beauty out of darkness until his own darkness took him at forty.
