Biography: Maupin’s Tales of the City series, which began as a newspaper serial in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1976, chronicled the lives of LGBTQ characters with warmth, humor, and radical normalcy at a time when gay representation was rare. His work helped build a sense of queer community through storytelling, making San Francisco’s Barbary Lane a fictional home for generations of readers. He came out publicly in the 1970s and has
remained a beloved chronicler of queer life.
