In 1970, Betsey Johnson was designing for Alley Cat, a junior sportswear label, when she realized the clothes were too polite for the world she actually lived in. By 1972 she had her own label, and by 1978 she was doing cartwheels down the runway at the end of every show—still in her fifties, still in a tutu, still flipping off anyone who told her to act her age. Her designs were corsets and tutus, safety pins and hearts, leopard print and lace, a love letter to every girl who was told she was "too much." She dressed Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, and generations of women who understood that fashion was supposed to be fun, not a punishment. This Postmodern homage is pure Betsey: a woman doing a cartwheel in front of CBGB, neon hearts, safety pins, leopard print, and the anarchic joy of a designer who proved that punk and princess were not mutually exclusive. The year reads 1972—when rebellion learned to giggle.
