Pan American Airways / 1939-1946 / The Ultimate Flying Boat

The Boeing 314 was the largest and most luxurious flying boat ever built. With a wingspan of 152 feet and the capacity for 74 passengers, it was a double-decker ocean liner that happened to fly. Pan American’s Clippers operated across the Atlantic and Pacific, offering sleeping berths, a dining salon with white-jacketed stewards, a lounge, and a bridal suite. Fares were equivalent to first-class ocean liner tickets, and the passengers expected nothing less than perfection. During World War II, the Clippers were pressed into military service, flying critical routes to Africa, Asia, and South America.
