BROADWAY LIMITED
Pennsylvania Railroad / 1912-1995 / New York to Chicago
The Broadway Limited was the Pennsylvania Railroad’s flagship all-Pullman express between New York and Chicago. Named for the PRR’s four-track ‘Broad Way’ main line, it represented the height of American railroad opulence for more than eight decades. The train departed from Pennsylvania Station in New York — McKim, Mead & White’s Beaux-Arts masterpiece — and arrived at Chicago’s Union Station. Along the way, passengers enjoyed dining-car cuisine prepared by chefs trained at the finest hotels, private compartments with en-suite facilities, and a level of service that rivaled the great European expresses. The Broadway Limited outlasted many of its competitors, surviving into the Amtrak era before making its final run in 1995. It was the last of the great all-Pullman trains, and its disappearance marked the end of an era in American overnight rail travel.
