BURLINGTON ZEPHYR

Burlington Route / 1934-1960 / Denver to Chicago

America’s first diesel streamliner, the Burlington Zephyr was a stainless-steel bullet of optimism that rewrote the rules of American railroading. Built by the Budd Company with a lightweight articulated body and a Winton 8-201A diesel engine, it was the future arriving ahead of schedule. On its inaugural run from Denver to Chicago on May 26, 1934, the Zephyr covered 1,015 miles in 13 hours and 5 minutes, averaging 77 mph and hitting 112 mph on the straightaways. It arrived at the Century of Progress exposition on the very day it departed, a feat of precision timing that made headlines across the nation. The Zephyr proved that diesel-electric power could replace steam on American main lines. Its success led directly to the Burlington’s fleet of Zephyrs and, ultimately, to the dieselization of American railroads. The original train is preserved at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
