With a 16-cylinder engine designed by Owen Nacker, it was the first production car with a 16-cylinder engine, and it established Cadillac as the pinnacle of American luxury. The V-16 was available in dozens of body styles, from formal town cars to racy convertibles. The engine was so smooth that a pencil could be balanced on its head at idle. The Goddess of Speed hood ornament, the chrome grille, and the Art Deco interior details made every V-16 a statement of wealth and taste. Despite the Great Depression, Cadillac sold nearly 5,000 V-16s over ten years. It was the choice of movie stars, industrialists, and politicians who wanted the ultimate in American engineering.
