Auburn Automobile Company / 1936-1937 / The Car of the Future
The Cord 810 is the most Art Deco automobile ever built. Its hidden headlights, coffin-nose hood, wraparound horizontal grille, and sweeping pontoon fenders were designed by Gordon Buehrig, a 29-year-old prodigy who created a masterpiece of Streamline Moderne. The 810 was front-wheel drive, a radical choice for 1936. Its Lycoming V8 engine was mounted behind the front wheels, allowing a lower, sleeker body. The transmission was a four-speed electrically shifted pre-selector. It was, quite literally, the car of the future. Production lasted only two years, and only 2,320 were built. Today the Cord 810 is one of the most collectible automobiles in the world, a symbol of the machine-age optimism that defined American design in the 1930s. Manufacturer Auburn Automobile Company
