The scarlet De Havilland DH.88 Comet was built for one purpose: to win the MacRobertson Air Race from London to Melbourne in 1934. It succeeded spectacularly, covering the 11,000 miles in 71 hours and setting a new standard for long-distance aviation. Piloted by C.W.A. Scott and Tom Campbell Black, the Comet defeated the best aircraft from France, the Netherlands, and the United States. Its twin engines, wooden construction, and aerodynamic design were far ahead of their time, and it proved that British aviation was second to none. Only three Comets were built, and two survive today. It was called the ‘Ocean Liner of the Sky,’ and it earned the title. Designed by Igor Sikorsky and built in Stratford, Connecticut, the S-42 could carry up to 32 passengers in wicker chairs, with a galley, sleeping berths, and a smoking lounge. Its range of 1,000 miles and ability to land on water made it ideal for island-hopping routes. The S-42 set ten world records for range, payload, and altitude. It proved that flying boats were viable for long-distance commercial aviation, paving the way for the Boeing 314 and the age of the Clipper. Manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft
