Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana met in Milan in 1980, and by 1985 they had created a fashion language that no one else spoke: black lace over bare skin, rosary beads as accessories, corsets that referenced the Inquisition, and a vision of Italian womanhood that was simultaneously virgin and vamp. Their 1992 "Sicilian Widow" collection turned mourning into high fashion. Their advertising campaigns looked like Caravaggio paintings shot for MTV. They took the baroque churches of Palermo, the lemon groves of Sicily, and the Hollywood glamour of Sophia Loren, and wove them into a style so specific it became a world.
