The apple-green express from London to Edinburgh, the Flying Scotsman is a symbol of British railway pride. LNER A3 Pacific No. 4472 was built in 1923 at Doncaster Works and named after the famous 10:00 AM departure from King’s Cross. It was the first steam locomotive to reach 100 mph officially, and it remains one of the most recognized trains in the world. In 1928, the Flying Scotsman began running non-stop between London and Edinburgh, a distance of 392 miles. To achieve this, LNER developed a corridor tender that allowed a relief — PAGE 9 — Planes, Trains & Automobiles — Vintage Poster Collection Page 9 crew to walk forward from the rear of the train to take over halfway through the journey. It was a feat of organization and engineering. After retirement from British Railways in 1963, the locomotive was preserved and toured the world, including a legendary trip to the United States in 1969. Today it is part of the National Collection and still steams on British main lines, a living connection to the golden age of express steam.
