Its corrugated aluminum skin, three radial engines, and boxy fuselage made it the workhorse of early American commercial aviation. Built by the Stout Metal Airplane Division of Ford Motor Company, the Trimotor could carry up to twelve passengers at 90 mph over distances of 500 miles. It opened the first scheduled airline routes across the United States and into Central America, and it proved that air travel could be safe, reliable, and profitable. The Trimotor’s most famous service was with Pan American Airways, which used it to pioneer routes across the Caribbean and Central America. Today a handful of Trimotors remain airworthy, offering nostalgic flights to aviation enthusiasts who want to experience the dawn of the airline era. Manufacturer Ford Motor Company
