The Milwaukee Road’s Hiawatha was the fastest steam train in the Midwest, an orange-and-maroon streamliner that cut through the lake country of Wisconsin at speeds that defied its modest size. Powered by streamlined 4-4-2 Atlantic locomotives with distinctive ‘shoelace’ cowlings, it was a visual and mechanical marvel. The train’s signature feature was the Skytop Lounge, an observation car with curved glass windows that swept up into the roofline, giving passengers an unobstructed view of the passing landscape.
