LNER / 1938 / World Record Steam Locomotive
LNER A4 Pacific No. 4468 Mallard is the fastest steam locomotive in history. On July 3, 1938, on the slight downward grade of Stoke Bank near Grantham, it reached a verified speed of 126 miles per hour, a record that stands to this day. Mallard was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as the culmination of the A4 Pacific class, a series of streamlined locomotives built for the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh. Its garter-blue livery, polished brass, and winged valance made it the most beautiful express locomotive in Britain. The locomotive is preserved at the National Railway Museum in York, where it is displayed alongside the other surviving A4s. In 2013, Mallard celebrated the 75th anniversary of its record by reuniting with its surviving sister locomotives, an event that drew railway enthusiasts from around the world.
