Biography: Hartley spent years in Berlin where he fell deeply in love with a young German military officer who died in World War I. His Berlin Abstraction series used coded military emblems, numbers, and symbolic colors to create a private visual language of grief and desire. The paintings were misunderstood in America as abstract military tributes, but they were actually love letters that could not be spoken aloud in his lifetime.
