Biography: White was a master of mid-century abstract photography who infused his images with spiritual and philosophical depth. His teaching at the California School of Fine Arts and Rochester Institute of Technology shaped generations of photographers. He was gay in an era when the photographic establishment was deeply conservative, and his work explored the male body and natural forms with a contemplative eye that transformed the mundane into the transcendent.
