Biography: Arenas was one of Cuba’s most important writers and its most famous gay dissident. His
semi-autobiographical novel Before Night Falls chronicled his persecution under the Castro regime for his homosexuality and his eventual escape to the United States during the Mariel boatlift. His writing is a torrent of language – sensual, political, and defiant. He died of AIDS in New York in 1990, leaving behind a testament to the freedom of the written word.
