Biography: Bonheur was the most famous female painter of the 19th century, celebrated across Europe and America for her monumental animal paintings. She wore men’s clothes, smoked cigars, and lived openly with her female
partners on her estate outside Paris. Napoleon III personally awarded her the Legion of Honor. Her work challenged every Victorian expectation of what a woman could be, painting with a muscular energy that matched her subjects.
