Ryan Airlines / 1927 / New York to Paris
Charles Lindbergh’s silver Ryan NYP monoplane was the machine that conquered the Atlantic solo. Built in sixty days by the Ryan Airlines factory in San Diego, it was designed for one purpose: to fly nonstop from New York to Paris.
On May 20-21, 1927, Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field in Long Island and landed at Le Bourget Airport in Paris thirty-three and a half hours later. He had no radio, no parachute, and no forward visibility except through a periscope. He became the most famous man in the world.
The Spirit of St. Louis is preserved at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., where it hangs in the Milestones of Flight gallery alongside the Wright Flyer and the Apollo 11 command module. It remains the most important single aircraft in aviation history.
