Biography: Gupta created his Pretended Family Relationships series in 1988 as a direct response to Section 28, the British law that prohibited ‘promoting the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.’ His photographs of gay couples, combined with protest imagery and poetry by his partner Stephen Dodd, became a powerful act of resistance. He has spent his career chronicling the beauty and struggle of queer communities across the globe.
