A LETTER, AND A DEBT OF GRATITUDE

When Barack Obama was elected President, we sat down and wrote him a letter. In those days Cuban families could not fly to the island directly; every journey had to route through a third country. When we were young, our parents would not risk the trip. By the time he was elected we were old enough to make the journey, if the rules would ever allow it. So we wrote, and asked him to do something about that. Whether the letter ever reached his desk we do not know, but a thank-you response arrived. And in his second term the doors opened: we returned to Cuba for the first time in fifty years. For that we will always be grateful. We make our home in Chicago, and the Obama Library Foundation makes its home here too. So a share of every one of these framed pieces goes back to it.
