Biography: Touko Laaksonen, known as Tom of Finland, created hyper-masculine leather-clad figures that became
an international symbol of gay liberation. His drawings were once illegal in America and burned by customs officials, but by the 1980s they were celebrated as high art. His influence extends far beyond the queer community – his aesthetic shaped fashion, advertising, and popular culture’s understanding of masculine beauty and confidence.
