No. 20 – THE PUNK PROVOCATEUR
The Dame Who Destroyed and Rebuilt Fashion

In 1971, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren opened a boutique called "Let It Rock" on King's Road, and by 1976 they had renamed it "SEX" and dressed the Sex Pistols in ripped shirts, safety pins, and bondage trousers that terrified polite society. She took the Queen's silver jubilee and turned it into a protest. She took Savile Row tailoring and safety-pinned it to anarchy. Her 1981 "Pirate" collection brought historical romanticism to the post-punk generation. But her true revolution was the 1970s: when she proved that fashion could be weaponized, that a T-shirt could be a manifesto, and that the most shocking thing a designer could do was tell the truth. This Postmodern homage tears up the rulebook: Union Jacks held together with safety pins, tartan plaids collaged against leather, the crown logo defaced with punk scrawl, and the raw energy of a woman who proved that the best way to respect tradition was to destroy it first. The year reads 1977—when fashion learned to scream.
