Biography: Muholi’s Faces and Phases series has documented South Africa’s Black lesbian and queer community for over a decade, creating an archive of visibility in a country where ‘corrective rape’ and murder remain terrifying realities. Their self-portraits in Somnyama Ngonyama transform the artist into African royalty, reclaiming Black queer identity from violence and erasure. ‘We exist,’ Muholi says. ‘This work is about ensuring that we are visible, respected, and recognized.’
